Tread Team Member Feature: Ahmed Nawaz – Field Operations Manager
Could you please tell us about your background and your current role?
Born in NYC and raised in Toronto. Graduated from the University of Toronto with a BBA, specializing in strategic management. I was fortunate and lucky enough that in my last year as a student, I was able to join my first startup ever, Uber! At Uber, I was quickly thrown into the rapid and ever growing startup space. The way at which we moved to accomplish things was astounding. I was able to grow and learn through various roles such as Operations and Sales for UberEats. We were able to launch and scale various markets in under a year! After Uber, I moved on to Customer Success at Hired. At this time Customer Success was still a fairly new role in the startup space and that intrigued me. I had done full cycle sales but saw many problems post sales with the lack of support for customers after they sign on that dotted line. That is what fuelled me to learn about Customer Success and help customers not only before the sale but afters as well. While at Hired, I got to see first hand the involvement of my role with the product and how it influenced what we built. This led me to go on another adventure and that is to be a Product Manager. Now at Tread, I have been given the opportunity to work in operations while learning from some great Product Managers and get to that goal of a Product Manager!
What do you like most about your job?
The part I love most about my job is my awesome team and how impactful our work is for our clients. We have some amazing team members from all backgrounds and this enables me to learn from them and get direct exposure to things they have encountered in their careers. I love to learn and grow as I am always finding new ways to pick up new skills that can help me be a better contributor to the problems we solve. At Tread we are solving some complex problems and working to take the construction industry digital but starting with digitization of users workflows first!
How do you like to spend time outside of work?
When I am not at work, you can find me out camping, playing basketball, biking, in the gym, learning a new skill, and spending time with my friends and family!
As a Field Operations Manager, what’s an average work day like for you?
To tell you the truth, every day for me is different. I usually put all the things I need to do in my calendar so I don’t forget them. I like to keep lists of items that I need to accomplish in a day or week and prioritize them. I am a very organized person so I can’t let anything slip through the cracks or it really bothers me! Typically my day consists of chatting with clients, implementing or onboarding new clients, taking care of reporting tasks, and bothering the rest of the product team to build new things for my clients!
What’s your favorite Tread feature and why?
My favourite feature here at Tread is called to Text to accept (TTA). I love this feature as it is simple in the way it solves a major problem and brings a lot of value to our customers. This feature allows a user to send a text with all their jobs details to multiple users at once! It can be 1 driver or 200+ drivers. Compared to what our users did in the past, this allows them save so much time as they do not have to individually text drivers, even subcontracted drivers. This feature also allows ours users to quickly make changes during the day and send them out in bulk. Not to mention, if it is a rain day, our users can choose a job(s) and send a cancellation text to all drivers ta once letting them know that their jobs for the day is cancelled. Pretty amazing!
From your perspective, how does Tread solve our customers’ challenges?
In my opinion the construction industry is stuck in the past. Everything is done on pen and paper and all records are on paper. Especially records that have to deal with proof of work and payments. We are looking to disrupt this space by digitizing the current workflow for trucking and more. If we were in an elevator and I had to sell you, I would say-Tread is a cloud based, SaaS platform that allows you to simplify, automate, and digitize all aspects of trucking and the movement of aggregates and materials. We accelerate the process from order to cash — through order entry, dispatching, tracking, 3rd party hauling management, ticketing, and insights!
Is there a problem & solution that you’d love to work on in the future in the construction industry?
Since I am working a bit more on the product side, I am always thinking about our customers and what they will need in the future. This sometimes can lead to down a rabbit hole as we get a lot o feature requests and you really have to step back and see the impact and reach of each feature that you want to build. For the future, what I would like to see from Tread is the tracking of equipment. When I say this, many things come to mind such as tracking equipment utilization, equipment details, performance, fuel, maintenance, insurance and much more! I think this Equipment management feature, however big we decide to build can bring tremendous value to our customers.
